Earth and Sky

The edge of earth and sky
is a sacred space,
exponentially expanded in liminality
by the presence of water
and the rising or setting
of the sun or moon.

To be present and attentive
to this frontier is to experience
the holy in ways previously unknown.

We know the moon pulls water
into tides, so we shouldn't be surprised
when she pulls our hearts toward more
than we knew existed otherwise.

The sun, with her flame so intense
we can only fleetingly glance,
even as she fades on the horizon,
shines light into deep places
we never imagined holding fire.

Let us chant our holy texts
and piece together rhythms
and tunes from these blessed encounters,
so the songs stay with us

when we return to brick, asphalt,
concrete, fluorescence, and
all the other hells with which
civilization has shackled us.
